We created the Solon and Liam Bailey Memorial Fund as a way to honor their lives through supporting the activities they loved, and by doing so in ways that help their Central Vermont community.
Thank you to the over 300 donors in Vermont, Kentucky and around the world. We thank you all for your generous gifts in their honor.
The Fund is dedicated to "Access to and Excellence in Children's Extracurriculars in Central Vermont" in the boys' favorite activities:
The Fund is housed at the Vermont Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charity in Middlebury, Vermont.
The Fund provides Capital Soccer with support for the Liam and Solon Bailey Memorial Jamboree. The inaugural round-robin tournament for U-10 and U-12 players was held in September, 2012.
Four or more students attend a week of soccer day camp with Capital Soccer in Barre with tuition scholarship support from the Fund each year.
Solon greatly enjoyed his week at the camp in 2009 and came home a budding expert in conservation laws and lore, and an enthusiastic target shooter. The camp was similar in many ways to Boy Scout camp, which both Solon and Liam (who snuck in as an under-age camper while mom was at camp as a chaperone) loved. Four or more students each from BTMES and Barre City Middle and Elementary School are given scholarships to the Buck Lake Conservation Camp for a week each summer.
The Piano Scholarships are for students showing passion and talent for the piano who otherwise may not be able to continue their lessons without scholarship assistance. Four or more piano students in Central Vermont have a portion of their piano instruction paid for each year by the Fund.
The Fund provides funding for scholarships to the Green Mountain Youth Symphony. Liam played percussion in GMYS.
The two book shelves full of new copies of books that Solon and Liam loved, we're told, continue to be highly popular. The Fund continues to purchase copies of new books in series on the shelf and audio readers, and replaces lost books. Click to see a photo of the book shelf at Barre City School.
Liam's biggest favorite, which he reread several times, was Brisinger, part of the Eragon series. He also loved the Olympians series including The Lightning Thief. Solon's favorites were the Ranger's Apprentice series and the Quantum Prophecy series.
Pompanoosuc Mills generously provided two beautiful bookshelves at steeply discounted prices.
